Network speed measurement [SpeedTest] on Linux OS
Here you can clearly learn how to measure network speed on VPS and Dedicated servers running Linux OS in the simplest and most effective way.
To measure the Internet connection speed, we will use the official Speedtest CLI by Ookla utility.
First, download the Speedtest archive using the following command:
wget https://install.speedtest.net/app/cli/ookla-speedtest-1.2.0-linux-x86_64.tgzOnce the download is complete, the ookla-speedtest-1.2.0-linux-x86_64.tgz archive will appear in the current directory.
Extract the downloaded archive:
tar -xf ookla-speedtest-1.2.0-linux-x86_64.tgzAfter extraction, the speedtest executable file will appear in the current directory.
You can now launch the utility and run a network speed test:
./speedtestWhen you run Speedtest for the first time, you will be prompted to review and accept the license agreement. Confirm your acceptance to proceed with the test.
Speedtest will then automatically select a suitable server and begin measuring the network connection speed.
During the test, Speedtest will measure the main connection parameters:
- Ping (Latency) — connection latency;
- Download — download speed;
- Upload — upload speed;
- Packet Loss — packet loss, if supported by the selected server.
Once the test is complete, the full test results will be displayed in the terminal.
Speedtest may also provide a link to a page containing detailed test results.
To run the speed test again, simply execute the following command:
./speedtest
